BEST TIME TO CLIMBING MOUNT KILIMANJARO

CLIMBING MOUNT KILIMANJARO – YEAR-ROUND POSSIBILITIES

Mount Kilimanjaro is accessible throughout the year, but the most favorable times to climb coincide with the drier months, when rainfall is less likely to interfere with the trek. These optimal windows are:

  • Early December to early March

  • Late June to late October

These periods are considered ideal due to clearer weather conditions, which also make them the busiest times on the mountain (peak season).

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

Above all else, safety should guide your decision. Adverse weather—such as rain, mud, snow, and ice—can make climbing significantly more challenging and taxing on the body. Good weather not only improves your comfort but also increases your chances of a successful summit. Keep in mind, these drier months draw the largest crowds.

SEASONAL WEATHER OVERVIEW

January to Mid-March
These are typically the warmest months, offering clear mornings and evenings. While daytime clouds and light rain are possible, conditions are generally favorable.

Late March to Early June (Long Rains)
This is the primary rainy season. Conditions are often very wet, with low visibility caused by dense clouds. While experienced trekkers might still tackle the mountain during this period, it is not generally recommended due to the high levels of precipitation.

Mid-June to Late October
This is the main dry season, bringing cooler temperatures but stable, dry conditions—perfect for trekking. Trails are busier, especially from July onwards.

November to Early December (Short Rains)
Rain typically returns during this short wet season. Afternoon showers are common, although mornings and evenings can remain clear. Trails are quieter, and the views—often misty with snow-dusted peaks—can be stunning.

Do note that Kilimanjaro’s weather is unpredictable. Rain can arrive early or extend beyond the typical seasons. You might experience good weather during a traditionally wet season or encounter unexpected rain during a dry spell.

MONTHLY GUIDE TO KILIMANJARO CLIMBING CONDITIONS

APRIL – JUNE
This is the height of the rainy season. Rainfall is frequent and intense, making conditions muddy and challenging. Few operators run climbs during April and May due to the poor weather.

JUNE – AUGUST
As the rains subside, temperatures drop. The mountain becomes cold, especially at night, but conditions are generally dry and clear. June is less crowded—an excellent time for a quieter trek.

AUGUST – OCTOBER
This is the busiest period for Kilimanjaro climbs, with mostly clear skies and pleasant daytime temperatures. Some moisture may linger in the lower forested areas, especially on southern routes, but conditions improve higher up.

OCTOBER – NOVEMBER
Weather becomes more variable. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, marking the transition to the short rainy season. Fewer climbers venture out, making for a more peaceful experience if you’re prepared for occasional showers.

NOVEMBER – DECEMBER
The short rains continue through mid-December. Despite less favorable weather, this is a fantastic time for scenic photography, with mist-covered slopes and a snow-capped peak.

DECEMBER – JANUARY
The holiday season (Christmas and New Year) brings a second peak in climbers. While there’s still a chance of rain, the festive period attracts many visitors, making the mountain busy.

JANUARY – MARCH
From mid-January through early March, conditions are stable with mostly dry days and fewer crowds. Temperatures are moderate, and visibility is generally good—an excellent time for those seeking a balance of good weather and quieter trails.

LOW SEASON CLIMBING – A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE

Climbing in the off-season appeals to those seeking solitude. Campsites are quiet, and it’s possible to trek in near isolation. Though the likelihood of rain increases, showers typically occur in the afternoon—most trekking is done in the morning, reducing exposure to bad weather.

Also, rain brings snow to the summit, which can create breathtaking vistas, especially in the early morning light. Regardless of the season, witnessing the night sky above the Rift Valley is an unforgettable reward.

WHY SAY KILIMANJARO IS A YEAR-ROUND DESTINATION?

Although certain times are more popular due to weather, climbs are possible throughout the year. Your travel dates, crowd preferences, and experience level can influence the best time for you. Routes like the Northern Circuit or Rongai, which lie on the drier northern slopes, are excellent options if you’re climbing in less favorable months or trying to avoid crowds.

The Lemosho and Northern Traverse routes also offer quieter alternatives to the well-trodden Machame and Marangu paths.

FULL MOON ASCENTS – A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE

Climbing Kilimanjaro during a full moon adds a special touch to your summit attempt. The bright moonlight can illuminate the glaciers, making for a surreal and memorable climb. Many climbers start the final ascent before midnight to reach the peak at sunrise—and under a full moon, you may not even need a headlamp. However, note that moonlight can make it harder to sleep and obscure views of the stars.
